      opinion pieces from writers all over the political spectrum. Many of those opinions differ with the stated policy stances of the newspaper itself. Ross Douhat is a Republican who writes for the NYT. It would be incorrect to say his opinions are the opinions of the NYT most of the time even though they appear there.  It's a useful distinction, the distinction between in the newspaper and of the newspaper.

      A similar situation might occur when a department in a university invites a controversial speaker to deliver a lecture. The opinions are expressed on the University campus, but they're not the opinions of the University administration.
