  •  Hospitals Cannot (10+ / 0-)

Turn away the uninsured across the board.  EMTALA prohibits it.

What will really happen is that suddenly the poorest of the poor will be getting 5-figure medical bills and being turned over to collection when they can't pay them, or even criminalized as the Times aptly documented yesterday by collection agencies who get judgments against them for the money.

The question is how long of a cycle of that has to happen before the poor folks who are knee-jerk Republicans throw the Scotts of the world out on their ear.

    •  But don't those collection agencies know that (1+ / 0-)

those bills will never be paid?  You will have trouble getting money from people who have no money.  Unless we wish to start new debtor's prisons, those judgements will never be paid.  Things are starting to look Dickensian, however, so I do not doubt that Governor Scott will try to revive the concept of the debtor's prison.

      •  Indeed, getting a judgement does not (0+ / 0-)

translate into receiving payment for that judgement.
