      friends to destroy old cell phones. I am a tech dunce. What they say is that even if you use software to erase the memory, significant proprietary information remains.  How does your group deal with residual information and how comprehensive is your technique for scrubbing the data?

        ...yes, grinding your phone up into a pile of dust is probably the right thing to do...just google "will it blend cell phone" for some demos.  But then, you have a pile of toxic dust, which is not good.

        My personal understanding (disclaimer -- I'm not a security expert) is that following your manufacturer's factory reset directions should be adequate for the types of info people keep on their phones.  If the phone's not password-protected, Eco-Cell also wipes all the phones they receive.
