live in? Here in MI we have no fault auto insurance. Your collision insurance would have paid to fix your car. The uninsured guy would be on his own. He'd also pay a stiff penalty for being uninsured in the first place.

under no fault, your insurance company fixes your car. That's the point of no fault. It prevents individuals (and insurance companies) from suing for property damage to their vehicle because fault is not an issue in an accident. If the other guy gets a ticket, you are allowed to recover up to $400 to cover the cost of your deductible.

Note that if you are at fault, i.e. you get the ticket, your company may raise your premiums as a result.

It is possible in MI to purchase limited collision insurance that covers your vehicle only if you are less than 50% liable for an accident. It's cheaper but rare though, because financial institutions insist on full coverage. But if you own your vehicle, you are free to carry limited or no collision insurance. Liability insurance is still required.

My kid rear ended another car recently. The other guys files a claim with his company. He gets $400 from her company because she received the ticket. Her company paid to fix her car, even though the accident was clearly her fault.

That's why they call it no fault.
