  •  A substantial number of Cuban immigrants (8+ / 0-)

come from families that were well-connected to American business interests, and thus very well-off, in Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s.

In other words, fairly rich people who stopped being fairly rich once Castro came to power. Upper management at the sugar plantations and cigar factories and Havana nightclubs.

That is largely why America treats them differently than other immigrants, and why other immigrants treat them with disdain. They are not "the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free" -- they are collaborators of the capitalist banana republic overlords who created a situation so bad that even Castro looked good by comparison.

Granted, few are alive today who were directly a part of that crowd. But it's a very different kind of immigrant from a very different family history.

sin and love and fear are just sounds that people who never sinned nor loved nor feared have for what they never had and cannot have until they forget the words

of Cuba - up to their armpits in corruption and exploitation of misery... and not all were direct enablers of the oligarchy below that... some had their property taken and lost businesses... middle class people... after all there were plenty of people between peasants and millionaires and the new regime was hard on many who disagreed or were gay or spoke out...

Pogo & Murphy's Law, every time. Also "Trust but verify" - St. Ronnie (hah...)
