Even before DADT was implemented, the medical corps was one of the few places in the military where a gay man or lesbian could be relatively open & safe - depending on one's commander of course. Medical skills are so valuable that the military could not afford to drum out all the gays & lesbians for fear of being unable to function. That could be the context of the comment.

As for the use of "fag" I whole-heartedly subscribe to the double standard. As a gay man I can use it, especially among other gay people, but you can't use it if you're straight except in very limited circumstances (e.g., quoting a homophobe). There is a power in taking that word back, especially if you had it thrown in your face for years. It is one way of owning your truth, although I get why others feel differently.

It isn't just "fag" either. I posted a comment on a diary about Anderson Cooper's coming out,  arguing the media shouldn't be reluctant about covering the lives of those in the "glass closet" because it isn't an insult to be thought to be gay and one of the replies disagreed, saying it was insulting to be thought of as gay - and it wasn't snark.

although I have told more than one guy that if not wanting to have sex with them made a woman a lesbian, then the race would likely die out.

I have also told them that if it was a choice between women and him, well, call me a dyke. :p

My family refuses to be insulted by the petty minds of others whose most imaginative insults include questioning ones sexuality or the relative size of ones procreative apparatus.  Lame.
