  •  I know what it's like (10+ / 0-)

to be in a Congressional District that is unlikely to ever be represented by someone who shares your political philosophy.  For a brief, shining moment, in 2009, my Congressional representative, both US Senators, the President, and the Governor, were all Democrats.  When we moved here in 2001, they were all Republicans.  Now, except for the President and one Senator (Casey), they're all Republicans again.  One might think that the fact that change was possible in the past could imply change in the future is also possible, but we've been gerrymandered into an even more conservative CD, so that's not going to happen.

So we are presented with the quandary of the liberal imprisoned in a conservative CD:  One is told to "act locally," but earnest local efforts will be fruitless.  So we turn our gaze to other CDs, even in other states, where the battle is actually winnable.

Darcy Burner has got to be one of the best possible candidates one could support.  The first time I heard her speak live, at NN09 in Pittsburgh, my one thought was "Why is the woman not in Congress already"  She had lost two Congressional runs at that point (2006 & 2008), in part due to smear tactics used by her opponent.  We ought to do all we can to make sure that she gets over the hump this time around.

    •  Thanks to another who signed for the quilt! (10+ / 0-)

That is in itself a high honor, I think, gizmo. I envy you that. I wish I could have signed it.

I believe in act locally. There are votes I fight for in my personal circle. Some I won't get for this election, some I may never get. But some I definitely will. And I'm very committed to the work!

      Thank you for visiting tonight!

      •  I'm glad I was able to sign (9+ / 0-)

the quilt, but really, I was just in the right place at the right time.  It's kind of intimidating to try to come up with something that is short, pithy and original.  I almost didn't sign it because I was having trouble thinking of something, but eventually the muse spoke.

I will also do what I can locally, but we have to target our efforts in directions that will lead to achievable results.  Opposing the incumbent Republican Congressman isn't going to work.  Supporting a candidate for the State Senate in an open seat in a swing district just might work.  We have to pay attention to the rising stars and help them as we can.

It's always a pleasure to read your diaries, Ben.
