  •  I hope Russia sees the writing on the Wall (7+ / 0-)

I believe Syria would have a new gov't being formed if not for the support Russia has given Assad.

    •  Russia could ease Assad out (6+ / 0-)

is a theory some Lebanese acquaintances have suggested, because anger against the Russians is beginning to build.

If Russia believes Assad is doomed, and they stick with him to the end, they'll lose all influence in Syria, and their port in the Med. But if they ease him out, they have a better chance of retaining some presence after the overthrow.

No insider information, just passing along a theory that sounded plausible.

    •  Hmmm. The US has supported all manor of (2+ / 0-)

dictators so that US companies could sell weapons etc to them. Russia is  no different?

How did the Supreme Court decision on ACA help the 23 million still uncovered? Ask the 18,000 Doctors of http://www.pnhp.org ... they're not waiting, but working now to pass H.R. 676, the “Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act .

support of Assad really does not wash.  Supporting a dictator is not validated because other dictators were supported in the past.

Following your logic, the Khmer Rouge should be given a pass because of the Nazi's and the Holocaust.  Or maybe the Nazi's should be given a pass because of the  Armenian genocide.

I don't think your logic holds up.

         Just my opinion.

        •  Who was using it to SUPPORT what Russia (1+ / 0-)

          •  Let the Kos Readers decide! (0+ / 0-)

Your statement, " Hmmm. The US has supported all manor of (1+ / 0-)
dictators so that US companies could sell weapons etc to them. Russia is  no different?"

An excuse or explanation why Russia is "No Different."  because some other nation did the same thing is support in my view.

Let the readers decide for themselves.

Now I am letting go of this argument about syntax and moving on.

I hope this news this diary brings is evidence of the end of an authoritarian regime in Syria.

I already told you that was not my intent.

              Have a great afternoon!

      •  Difference being (3+ / 0-)

When push came to shove, we pulled the rug out from under "our" dictators like Mubarak and Saleh.  In Egypt, we used our influence to prevent the type of government sponsored bloodletting rampant in Libya, Syria, and Sudan.

There's still that sticky Bahrain business, but even there our influence has been able to prevent the government from trying to shell the opposition into submission.  Its still teargas and batons.

To at least a degree, we care about how our puppets act towards their own people.  Russia & China don't.

what is being done since so much of the expansion under our Dem President has been carried out in secret.  See drone wars, expanded use of special forces in Africa, etc...
