  •  I think one of the most universal reasons (0+ / 0-)

for crime is opportunity. Been awhile since I saw specific breakdowns.

Predators gravitate toward occupations that afford an opportunity for predation.
I think Cherry's comment is especially true of the military culture. I married into an AF family and worked with a lot of military wives and some active or former members. Done a lot of vet care outside the VA.

I don't think the AF made my father in law abusive, it was clearly the family and childhood he came from. Once he got in, was a bomber navigator in Germany in the Army Air Corps when shot down. He survived 18 mo as a POW and transferred to the new AF when recovered, by invitation. He did 30 years, ~2 decades as a wing commander for NORAD. He liked the power. It was almost all psychological and emotional, kids' punishment was also typical of the German heritage.

It was both an occupation and a culture that gave him a sense of satisfaction and identity. He never did anything that I am aware of that was remotely inappropriate sexually. I could see him not being willing to tolerate anything in his command more than overlooking or covering it. That is an overall impression, also based on his three sons' values and actions.

What intrigues me is what appears to be a bigger problem in the AF than the other branches. It is the modern arm, far less institutional history, etc. than the others. It's also the one that seems to have had the most infiltration by the fundamentalist element.

I have some conflict over the idea that rape is only about power. It certainly is about it, and I think there are plenty who like the combination with sex. Some are just too indoctrinated with the cultural ideas about entitlement. The sole female naval member on the remote Alaska site that was periodically sedated and raped by several guys makes me suspicious. It goes with a lot of date rape, especially with drugs and alcohol. Then there are the Mormon cults who reward the faithful elders with child brides they rape as part of the wedding.

There are some who clearly prefer using objects, etc. and are only interested in power and humiliation. I haven't been willing to check if the possibility of several psych causes has been explored at all.

I think the military has a major opportunity to collect a whole lot of data and help psychology get even better information to work from. Partly because the problem definitely goes beyond attacks on military women. Every base, all over the country and around the world has problems with soldiers off base assaulting local women - and getting away with it.

As long as the military suspends anyone who has charges, investigates thoroughly and prosecutes appropriately, the predators will be weeded out. If we can do long range data collection on doctors and nurses for health issues, why not the military for sexual predation and crimes?
