The news during the Penn State trial and similar stories really upset my son. He is 13 and takes good care of himself but he really hates to hear about someone else being hurt. He had a girlfriend last year who had previously had trouble with a gropey boyfriend(this is middle school and I don't think it went far, but enough to be uncomfortable). My son was extremely protective of her, not at all trying to prove himself as a man in any way. (I read his Facebook messages but never told him or used information against him.) I was really proud, to see how he encouraged her to feel better about herself. It didn't last so long - he is still pretty shy with girls - but I think he gets the message that friends help each other, protect each other and build trust.

    •  It is wonderful to know when kids stand up (8+ / 0-)

For other kids.  It is a small step that means a huge amount. Maybe not today, maybe not this year...but it teaches kids to be true and protective of others.

Sounds like you are a great mom!

    •  Sounds like you have a good son, Chun Yang (8+ / 0-)

I have two boys, one 23 and one 7 (no error on the ages there!  hubby and I call it good college planning - LOL)

It also sounds like your boy is pretty lucky to have you as a role model too :)

We have a very open and honest relationship, by that I mean, he cusses like a sailor and shares his opinions freely. Home is that place he can vent and not hold back, so it was really lovely to see this side of him, the loyal and kind side. I saw it when he was little, when he would tell me he wanted a sister and how she could sleep in his bed and he would sleep on the floor on a futon to protect her. I take no credit at all, except that I let him express himself. He came to us from China and by 8 months of age when we got him, he had his personality. It is like in astrology, when a planet transits your chart, you find a way to work with the energy, not fight it.
