  •  Poor people are already taking the hit (5+ / 0-)

Sales taxes and fees in TX are scandalously high -- or so I found when I moved there from MA.  I still have property there even though I no longer live in Dallas, and know how high property taxes are compared with those I pay in NM now.  But when I lived in TX they were always trying to cap property taxes and increase sales taxes, shifting more of the cost of government onto the poor.

Disenfranchising the poor and working classes by making them afraid to register to vote is a good point, and one a strong populist political party would know to meet head-on.  That's why I think economic populism -- class resentment of everybody else against the rich -- is the foundational issue a reinvigorated Democratic party will need to embrace.  Until we get people pissed off at the right target, they'll always be vulnerable to divide-and-conquer tactics by those offering them the wrong targets to hate.

      Loved your post above.

I think this could be a cynical ploy and could become a national policy strategy.

Throw them red meat. Put all the eggs in the gut of your base.

Turn off thought and trust us.

How it gets treated in the media, that's what I'm looking for. If economic ideas get shellacked and they try to run them out of town on a rail - if they're labeled unserious or naive - then I know we're on the right path.

Democracy - 1 person 1 vote. Free Markets - More dollars more power.
