  •  I don't believe it's a CONSCIOUS rape comment (7+ / 0-)

I work with ad people all the time, and believe me, they're not deep thinkers. This was just not thought out to it's endpoint, or if it was, they just reasoned 'oh the percentage of people offended will be (small number), which is similar to the amount who will be offended by ANY remark, so it's okay' and dismissed the thought.

Now that's not to say its okay, and you should make it clear to them that you find it unacceptable, and it must be changed. As you say it's important to change the unthinking acceptance of 'rape culture' - I think Hollywood and Adam Sandler may have learned that lesson with the failure of his latest movie 'That's My Boy', which was a 'comedy' about the rape of a young boy. Protests about these topics bring the problem to the conscious thought processes.

...teacher committing statuatory rape of an underage boy; that's just something they threw in there to explain Sandler being so close in age to his son, etc. Doesn't excuse using it as a punchline, though.

because Sandler wants to play a character who's a 30-something man child, rather than the washed-up 47-year old hack he really is.

    •  Oh, Adam Sandler makes money even when (0+ / 0-)

his movies lose money. Some might even go so far as to make the case that his movies are an bona fide scam.

      •  The only Adam Sandler movie worth watching... (0+ / 0-)

...is Happy Gilmore, and that's because of one scene in the movie where Bob Barker beats Sandler up at a golf tournament!

        •  I hear Punch Drunk Love is quite good (0+ / 0-)

Mainly because it's about how effed up an Adam Sandler-like character really would be, and because it's neither written nor directed by Adam Sandler.
