GFDL came out of the GNU folks, so it's generally lefty hippie, share the earth (with a few legendary exceptions). It represented a way, shy of public domain, to put works up and say, "Don't mess with it. Don't you try to make money off it by claiming a copyright. Give credit to the author."

Don't get me wrong: the big commercial sources act like it's public domain anyway, but there is a court-tested license there for any artist who disagrees with the use and mangling. (E.g. Fox News may show a GFDL photo and give no credit and not alter it. They imply that it's theirs, and there is a c symbol on their broadcast. The artist will usually not want to get involved. If, though, they recrop the picture to make it lie and make it famous, the originator has a big case.)

Every reductio ad absurdum will seem like a good idea to some fool or another.
