  •  Center is of time, not space, then? (0+ / 0-)

I know that space and time are almost synonyms.

However, the center you refer to would only be spatial as well as temporal if there were a symmetrical expansion. As a temporal center, it seems like your usage is "central power" or "prime mover."

It's interesting, because "center" has implied in it both power and use and an assertion of objectivity, and each one reveals the political and cultural currency of we who speak. (Center as origin privileges the father/cause as somehow essential. I don't disagree, of course, but it's the extra freight of our thoughts that I think is interesting and remarkable.)

    Everyone is innocent of something.

    •  I was really thinking in more concrete (0+ / 0-)

graphical terms, as in the center at the origin of a 4-D graph. I don't think we've discovered much variation in the microwave background so the universe appears to be expanding at a uniform rate of acceleration.  From that I interpret that the uniformity has existed from the onset. But understand that at time zero (13.6 Billion years ago) a singularity formed, just a point coming into existence. That was our universe. It inflated and exploded - BANG. Our galaxy is said to be over 12 billions years old, so it began to form a billion and a half years post BANG. That puts us a long way from the edge and probably even a lot further from the center. That center may not even exist in our universe now if the model that predicts a doughnut-shaped universe have it right.

More locally, the center of the galaxy is a place of immense power, maybe too much so. Ambient radiation on worlds near the galactic core may render them inhospitable to life.

In macroscopic nature, the really interesting things don't happen at the center, but rather at the edges where the dissimilar meet.
