  •  I suppose there's feedback of melting ice caps (3+ / 0-)

Age old question: why is snow white? It's white, because ice has an albedo effect, which reflects sunlight back into space, taking heat with it. Snow has a slightly higher albedo than Arctic ice. Architects in Greece and the Middle East used that effect as a planning trick to build light-colored structures to keep heat out. As snowmelts happen earlier and the ice extent continues to drop, less solar energy is reflected, more is absorbed, and the hotter it's getting. Because 2012's ice extent is declining so harshly (lowest June on record), it's probably going to exacerbate the problem.

Don't think that zeroes in on your question very well, but that's been a huge consideration to the exponential, hockey stick chart. I think most kossacks are already well aware of the albedo feedback loop anyway.

We have had "latent" mosquito growth here, though. Because of the very mild winter in the Mid-Atlantic, some mosquitoes that survived over last year have made an earlier appearance. Yikes.
