As most of us know, Limbaugh's show is considered to have one of the largest listener bases in America. (In the past it commanded huge advertising rates, too, though that time is gone.)

What I wonder is this -- obviously it's pretty easy, and cheap, to game the system of Facebook "likes." How hard and expensive is it to game the radio ratings (Arbitron) system?

And how much do you want to bet Limbaugh has been doing it?

People are selected at random to be Arbitron listeners, and they report their radio listening in one of two ways: self-reporting via diary, and the Portable People Meter, or PPM. The PPM is carried by a person like a pager, and it records inaudible signals embedded in radio transmissions. It detects movement, so you can't leave it at home sitting in front of a radio tuned to a station of your choice. PPM is considered much more accurate than the self-reporting. To game the system, you'd have to have a lot of these random people get together and decide how they were going to scam.

the $3 Arbitron sent me summer-before-last to "compensate" me for keeping a radio log for them one week of everything I listened to in the car. As it coincided with a road trip and we were already big on podcasts, I'm not sure they got the info they wanted.

        ....or other non-terrestrial radio programs?

9-11 changed everything? Well, Katrina changed it back.

and asked me to fill out the name of the podcast in the time blocks where I would otherwise have radio program names. I put the source (site) for the podcasts in the "station" blocks.
