    Pretty much an atheist, but I was brought up semi observant.

    As a kid, the only thing I knew about Shavuot was that we got off from school for it (this was NYC in the 50s and 60s, when so many of the teachers were Jewish there wouldn't have been enough staff present to run them). The only thing I knew about Tisha b'Av was that it was always far in the future: my parents wouldn't wait "from now until Tisha b'Av" for something.

    As an adult, I learned the interesting history of Tisha b'Av, including a visit to the Arch of Titus in Rome, which depicts the sack of the Temple and which Jews are forbidden to walk through. But I never could remember exactly what Shavuot was about.
