  •  Do we really want Mitt out of the race? (9+ / 0-)

To be replaced by someone else exciting who can possibly excite the base? President Obama is vulnerable because of the economy.  His opponents have just been abysimal.  Let him stay in. I hope he doesn't release his taxes until OCTOBER. Now we know we'll take back the house and retain the senate.  The President has learned how to set the stage for good policy and politickin'.  THAT would make for an awesome 2nd term.

    •  Can you imagine the clustered copulation (21+ / 0-)

that a Mitt withdrawal would induce?

      1) Ron Paul and his loyal Paultroons would expect him to be nominated as the only candidate left in the race
      2) Rick Santorum and his frothy mix of supporters would expect him to be nominated as the candidate with the second-most delegates
      3) Newt Gingrich would expect to be nominated as the smartest person ever, let alone among those running
      4) Whoever emerged as the nominee would have to set up a nationwide campaign, which only Paul has begun (that was what really cost Santorum and Gingrich ... no infrastructure). A white knight like Jeb Bush or Chris Christie would be inventing a campaign from scratch.
      5) The new candidate has done little work, or no work, building a coalition of Republicans. If you think Romney has problems with the base, imagine what would happen to Jeb or Chris.
      6) Nominating anyone who ran against Romney and lost pisses off the supporters of the other candidates.

    •  I feel like this story (0+ / 0-)

is breaking a tad too early....would have been nice to see it break in August some time, maybe the week before the GOP convention.

But even so, if Romney were forced to withdraw right now, it would be a complete disaster, unprecedented in the modern era. Closest thing I can think of to compare it to would be the Eagleton debacle in 72.

But Romney's not going anywhere, sooner or later he'll start attacking the media and that will shore up the base at least....

To hell with repeal-and-replace. The president should run on maintain-and-improve.--Pierce
