    Dated, not so much. Deffeyes' perspective is that of an oil and gas producer, not necessarily an overall energy expert. The style is pretty informal, but the analysis of Hubbert's fulfilled prediction is quite thorough nonetheless. Personally, I didn't find it to be dogmatic.

    If you're looking for a more scholarly, more up-to-date and frankly more readable work, I'd recommend Beyond Oil which largely dispenses with the anecdotes and provides a sober examination of energy alternatives. It includes some of the sources and areas mentioned above.

    Most importantly, Deffeyes tends to stick a pin in the inflated notion that extracting methane hydrates or carting LNG around the globe is going to be just like business as usual. Which is good, because it isn't.
