  •  I saw "Casablanca" just today (9+ / 0-)

at the beautiful Alabama Theater in Birmingham, a gorgeous movie palace.  I was pleased with the age range, and there was actually a couple next to me who appeared to be in their late 20s.

just had a showing of the Wizard of Oz, including a pre-show and intermission performance on the theatre organ (played by my cousin!) Apparently it was pretty well attended.

...I had some students who would go to a local outdoor theater to watch old movies.  I remember them singing the praises of "The Apartment."  Pretty cool.

One of the local large cinemas had a showing of "Casablanca" on one of their large screens (well, much larger than any of your largest TV screens) and it was great.
I was there early so I never looked back to get an estimate of how many people were there in the dark, but I guessed around 200.
What I really liked was that the audience was a mix of young and old.
When the movie ended the audience applauded.
Too bad that theater chain doesn't show more of the old classics on their screens. Like "The Third Man" or the old Hitchcock black and whites.
I strongly believe that many young people who love the old classics along with all of the Boomers who live here would go to these re-showings if they did it on a regular basis. Like every weekend at least.
To me that is definitely a "niche" market that is waiting to be tapped here in this major city.
