    That people were transformed in those days by such a warmed-over mishmash of scraps as Lord of the Rings says volumes about them, none of it complimentary. The only thing it did for me was to get me hunting after translations of the original sagas and Old English literature. Oh, and to read the hilarious Harvard Lampoon parody, Bored of the Rings.
