    Indeed this is true.  Look at pharmaceuticals - all this advertising, all this waste on "improving" the product.  Look at osteoarthritis - we had perfectly good drugs for it, then along comes Sally Field and boniva - oh this is so great because you only take it once a month, it was just so hard to take a pill once a day. Then out came Restiva -an outpatient procedure for the same thing, but you only need it once a year! No better outcomes, no fewer side effects (in fact worse) but hey, let's do the same thing, throw marketing $$ at it and increase the cost to everyone.

    We already have much of this in education - how many textbooks are re-written every year, even your basic Calculus I textbook, when the one from 5 years ago would do just fine?
