For fuck's sake, Al Green wrote the song, and he loves him some Obama.  It's not so much about the money, it's about the permission.

There's been lots of stories about artists' objecting to their creative output getting used over the years.  At least back to the 1980s, when Springsteen told Reagan he couldn't use "Born in the USA", a song he wrote.  And it's always that they won't give permission, not that they want to collect payment.  If the latter were the case, they'd send a bill.

or was it legally stolen from him right at the start? he was part of the wave of artists that straddled the old rip off era and the later era that was less exploitative.... originally musicians had their songs and recordings signed away in the crooked stingy contracts they had to take... and then things improved (started with the Beatles) and artists got a fairer return on their stuff... but Black artists were often ripped off for a while longer. Did Al get a fair deal and does he get the max royalties from this particular song? Of course even today labels, producers, agents, accountants rip off musicians and songwriters.

Pogo & Murphy's Law, every time. Also "Trust but verify" - St. Ronnie (hah...)
