  •  Just a few of the many, many questions (3+ / 0-)

that this diary raises (see footnotes):

A few days back a summary of Occupy Security MMOG's research on the Romney's 1968 accident was made available1 at the catholic.com web site. This fantasy scheme2 protected Mitt Romney, of course. How it did it was by deploying a dishonest, thoroughly anti-Catholic scheme that slandered Catholic clergy.

The posting at catholic.com worked like a "honey pot" in database and web site systems, attracting criminal "bees" to show what they were up to at the web site.

First off, the "bees" got in and all trace of the posting was deleted from catholic.com. Even the "vilnet" tag was deleted.3

Then, shortly after, a fake web page appeared at a Shanghai web server4 and it's hit-count was bumped up to give the fake page a high Google-search display priority5 . The interesting part of the content on this page is a rebuttal section from "Dale_M Forum Elder" that focuses on supporting elements of the Team Lying dysinformation stream:

1 By whom? The context makes this sound like an act of vandalism. Why should we trust the word of vandals?

2 Huh? What? What fantasy scheme? Were the vandals posting something meant to protect Mitt Romney?

3 Now I'm very confused. Who -- if anyone -- are the good guys here? The people who made the "fantasy scheme" available, or the people who erased it? What role would the catholic.com server admins have played in this scenario? It sounds to me like they'd have been the one to erase the story and the associated links. Or was it the erasure that represents an act of vandalism?

4 What was the URL and/or IP address of this Shanghai server? Are you saying that the DNS entry for catholic.com was redirected, without authorization, to point there?

5 I know what a "hit count" is. Do you? Can you explain how a higher "hit count" increased the page's Google search ranking? Alternatively, can you rephrase this in a way that makes technical sense?

Satisfactory answers to these questions might take this diary out of CT territory. Until then, the HR stands.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.
