Things similar to this have happened in South Carolina several times.  We've had republican supported and funded candidates run on the Democratic ticket.  All their money comes from Republicans.  Some haven't actually lived in the district, but manage to convince a Republican board of elections that some rental property they own counts.  The games never end down here.  Some of it's illegal.  Some of it isn't.

We have paperless voting anyway, so it is hard to tell what is really going on.

...have been known to gain ballot access on the Democratic ticket, in fact, in 1986, the LaRouche organization planted Mark Fairchild and Janice Hart as fake Democrats for Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State, respectively, and they defeated legitimate Democrats George Sangmeister and Aurelia Pucinski in the Democratic primaries!

This year, Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion extremist organization, planted Angela Michael as a fake Democrat in the congressional district that I live in, IL-15. Michael won the Democratic primary because no legitimate Democrat ran against Michael!

To my knowledge, the Illinois Republican Party organization itself hasn't attempted to run a fake Democrat, yet...don't be suprised if they try to pull that trick in an attempt to gain power in Illinois.
