but something people should be aware of

A study published in June issue of the journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology  found there is an effect on skin cells and I'm not sure you get around it by buying the more expensive of the bulbs

Results revealed significant levels of UVC and UVA, which appeared to originate from cracks in the phosphor coatings, present in all CFL bulbs studied.
It's just about them being close to you (don't know how close close is) but even then there is ways around it, like glass cover...
“Our study revealed that the response of healthy skin cells to UV emitted from CFL bulbs is consistent with damage from ultraviolet radiation,” said Professor Rafailovich. “Skin cell damage was further enhanced when low dosages of TiO2 nanoparticles were introduced to the skin cells prior to exposure.” Rafailovich added that incandescent light of the same intensity had no effect on healthy skin cells, with or without the presence of TiO2.
“Despite their large energy savings, consumers should be careful when using compact fluorescent light bulbs,” said Professor Rafailovich. “Our research shows that it is best to avoid using them at close distances and that they are safest when placed behind an additional glass cover.”
Oh maybe I'm the light bulb gal because I hope they find better answers than current cfl bulbs. There are issues using them outside (there are special ones marked for cold temp uses), in things that create vibration, like ceiling fans...
Leaving them on for short periods shortens their life quite a bit, they should be left on at least 20 minutes... In many areas that works but for closets or quick bathroom trips at night where you want light on just a minute... you are likely to lose any savings
Oh, I forgot enclosed and especially enclosed recessed lights. Quick burnout.
Lots of problems with those 3 way lights too

I tend to be mocked when I note these things here even when I provide the links from official sources, but there you go.
