    Holiness the Dalai Lama.

    There is a reason Buddhism is growing in the west. He has always remained open minded and willing let his faith evolve based on current attitudes and science.

    If scientific analysis were conclusively to demonstrate certain claims in Buddhism to be false, then we must accept the findings of science and abandon those claims.
    Of course, Buddhism doesn't answer to a deity, so maybe that lets it be more flexible.

    If I were going to be religious, I'd probably be a Buddhist.

      Buddhism is considerably more doctrinally fractured than Christianity. The most popular form of Buddhism actually ends up looking a lot like Christianity, which is part of why Christianity ended up being able to get such a strong foothold in Korea.

        are flocking to Buddhism is that they want something to cling to -- but want something that doesn't tell them explicitly what to do.

        I have attended a couple of events that were sponsored by local Humanist/Atheist organizations. But by and large, I avoid anything that is even remotely group-oriented. I simply don't like organized anything -- unless it is truly secular -- like the Federal government (when it isn't run by a bunch of fascist asshole Republican lunatics...)
