  •  No, we don't need to talk about deinstitution- (8+ / 0-)

alization, we need to create SAFE places to put these people.

Talk does not do anything, and there's been enough of that. Build new facilities, hire trained staff, and generally act like Jesus* and the atheists** would.

    *Taking care of each other

**because it is the right thing to do.

Obama is a politician, some things he says just to have one less f*cking crisis at a time.

This is, of course, the difference between republicans and human beings. - Captain Frogbert

Online petitions do nothing. Mail-in petitions like the ones I get from some enviro groups targeting house and senate leadership do nothing. Emails have done nothing. Phone calls do nothing. Letters to the editor do nothing.

All of these impotent things that have been done have something in common - none of them actually disrupt the smooth flow of the machine.

As long as the machine keeps humming, all of the screaming and dead trees mean nothing. NOTHING.

Which leads me to ask if that was the motivation of the shooter.

We're assuming he's mentally ill, which was also my first assumption, but how do we know this wasn't a political act? Creating a rallying cause for one party or the other could polarize the electorate towards one candidate or another.

That he didn't commit suicide by cop or by his own hand leads me to wonder if he might have been rational.

      •  JayfromPA & glorificus. Voices matter. Please (0+ / 0-)

        Believe.  Please.

        From DOJ statement:

In 2009, on the tenth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead, President Obama launched “The Year of Community Living” and directed federal agencies to vigorously enforce the civil rights of Americans with disabilities.  Since then, the Department of Justice has made enforcement of Olmstead a top priority.  As we commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Olmstead decision, the Department of Justice reaffirms its commitment to vindicate the right of individuals with disabilities to live integrated lives under the ADA and Olmstead.
Full DOJ statement & guide here:

Complete info including lawsuits, briefs et al  are here:

Synopsis of Olmstead v. L.C. and E.W. history:

Staggering amount (but probably still not enough) of services to be put into place by set dates in my state of GA where it all began.  Too lengthy to put here; however I mention this because if not for voices & "trees" (the AJC & advocates) Olmstead would not be.

Olmstead & the DOJ may be coming to your state (or already there)

        Please believe.  (And holler louder...)

    •  Sweetie...where is safe? (2+ / 0-)

I am not sure there is such a place but you are right.
something with oversight and treatment center like The Betty Ford Clinic to keep people as safe as possible but who makes the call and sometimes the call is after the fact.
