    never owned a car. My mother, born 1921 died 2009, never had a driver's license.

    Mom did want to learn to drive. In 1959, my father bought a brand new Ford Edsel. My Mom insisted that she be allowed to take it for a spin. There were two large poplar trees flanking our suburban gravel driveway. The Edsel comes down the street, my Mom at the wheel, she cuts into the drive a bit too fast, and my Dad is hanging out the passenger window yelling, "Tree! Tree!" My Dad thereafter agreed to drive my Mom where ever she wanted to go.
