I remember the 1994 Virginia race.  Oliver North against Chuck Robb was a close one.  As I recall, Robb was always slightly favored and beat North by 3 percentage points.

The divided field included Marshall Coleman, endorsed by Republican Senator John Warner, who hated North.  Coleman ran as an independent.

North was challenged by former Reagan budget director, Jim Miller, within the party.  Had the Virginia Republican Party held a primary, Miller might have given North some trouble, who knows?  However, Va. Republicans opted for a nominating convention to anoint Oliver North, who was a prolific fund raiser for them, and was determined to be the "most electable" of the field (remind you of someone?).

In the end, North's novice approach to politics, and his inability to overcome Iran-Contra, was his undoing.  He was not able to project the ill-deserved "hero" status to everyone like he thought he could.

North really only lost because of Coleman - he would have beaten Robb in a one on one or if former Governor Wilder had stayed in the race as an independent. Warner actually cut an add for Coleman in the final weeks where he pumped him up and said 'Marshal, let's get to work!' There was some question about who would introduce North in the senate if he won as it was usually done by the state's senior senator if they were of the same party, but clearly that wasn't going to happen with North and Warner. Given his negatives, I thought North ran a decent campaign but it's very hard to win when you have a split party like that. I think North losing was about the only thing the Dems had to celebrate that night.
