I agree with Angela that this is a false equivalence. For one, even people against abortion rights and who believe that abortion is murder have to admit that abortion providers don't just go around aborting fetuses at random. Someone asks them. No one asked James Holmes to do what he did in that theater.

Also, all guns aren't the same. Personally, I'm not in favor of banning handguns or hunting rifles, but I am in favor of banning or seriously restricting access to weapons that have no purpose other than to kill a large number of people in a short time.

probably reconsider which guns you like the least. Hand guns far outnumber any other type of gun in homicides. I think as a percentage of the murders committed rifles of all types come in at around 4% and those ugly black guns are just a subset of rifles. Not that I'm in favor of any gun bans mind you, just thought I'd mention it.

How big is your personal carbon footprint?

Good point, that's worth thinking about.

I think there is an important line to be drawn, though, between the guns (handguns, rifles) that can be used for something other than mayhem. The fact that we're over that line tells you something.

      Anti-gun crusades:

      1) NO handguns.  Handgun Control Inc., became the Brady Campaign.

      2) NO rifles, and no hunting, as that's the well-worn excuse for having the damned things.
People get their food from the grocery store, not the open range.  The danger of these guns, which can all be traced to some current or long-ago military arm, is too great.  Become a vegan, all animal-sourced foods are cruel.

      3) NO shotguns.
The FBI crime lab can't do a "ballistic fingerprint" of a shotgun.  They're outlawed by the Geneva Convention for use in war.  They contribute lead contamination and undermine threatened and endangered species preservation efforts.

      So...
lets ask those here on Dkos, which ONE they'd pick.

"One" "No Three" "Two! It must be two!" "Yes!... I want them all!"
      Would be the answer.

"IF I can't ban handguns, then you can't ban rifles."
"What about shotguns?  Can't we compromise?"

      "Yes.  Ban them all."
      That's the consensus answer.

Now all the pro-gun folks need do is "be reasonable" and accept the collective progressive wisdom.

I suggest a litmus test at the polls this fall:

      Do you own a gun?

Yes > GO HOME... you're no longer eligible to vote.  Ever.

No > Go vote.  I'd suggest Obama.  Look for the (D) next to all the names.  Choose those persons ONLY.

      On the subject of abortion:

How many hundreds of crack baby/heroin baby induced abortions have you delivered in a pre-hospital environment to women selling their bodies for drugs?

When your number matches my number, we'll have a substantive discussion on abortion rights, and how those rights can be abused - just like firearms.

"Choice" sounds great, until you've seen the same woman more than six times in a calendar year.
Same goes for owning 100 round magazines - they're great in theory.
