It was not the main point of the diary, but it is worth knowing that there was scientific reason back then to question a hurricane connection. Climate change can produce more wind shear, which can disrupt nascent hurricanes. Don't know what the state of knowledge is now.

As for the main point, curious readers can also check out The Climate Coverup, and Fool Me Twice, different angles on the same problem.

will be fewer because of wind shear but stronger because of warmer oceans.

    •  Wind shear was mentioned in the book, as well. (1+ / 0-)

It was careful to state that it wasn't a settled topic.  But NOAA came out and said definitely that Katrina and Rita were part of "the tropical multi-decadal signal."

Not only, as Bowen pointed out, that "it is statistically impossible to prove the existence of a twenty- to thirty-year cycle with only fifty years' worth of data."  NOAA denied that there had been "any recent reports indicating that 'global warming may have fact have been responsible for the intensity of the storms?'"

And there had been two, one by a NOAA scientist.  But the NOAA spokesperson refused to admit it.

It's not that there was a definite answer then, but they denied it was even possible.  Bell "[e]xhibit0ed] either an astounding ignorance of the scientific literature on the subject or a supreme fixation on sticking to his message."  (all quotations p. 146)
