would be great too. But it's not the ONLY acceptable topic, even in the case of very recent decease.  The unavailability of spousal benefits due to DOMA is by no means out of bounds.  It is, as you say, a factual matter.   Her same-sex partnership is now an acknowleged fact, and as such the legal impacts on it are an acknowledged fact.

It's not even necessary for someone to agree with a political position, in order for the public facts of their life to provide an instructive instance of that political position.  Plenty of women who opposed the ERA were and are affected by pay discrimination.  Not all black folks thought MLK had the right approach.  And so on.

Even if Ride had been active in FAVOR of DOMA, which she certainly was not, it would STILL be okay to talk about it.

Personally I think that in her quiet way she would agree that DOMA is unjust, and she would hope to see it overturned so that other surviving partners would not be denied equal justice under the law.

    •  So in addition to hijacking her image (0+ / 0-)

you seem to think it's ok to presume to read Dr. Ride's mind, imagining support for an issue important to many people but for which there is no indication one way or another as to how Sally Ride thought?

A Pancreatic Cancer Initiative has been set up as part of the UCSD Health Sciences Foundation and the family has requested donations in her memory be sent there.

      •  I state my own suppositions (0+ / 0-)

which are equally as likely to be valid as the personal suppositions of CuriousBoston, who posits that any mention of DOMA would have been horribly objectionable to Ride.

But your "gotcha" response is to my postscript, not to the main part of my post.  Which is that our lives can and do hold meaning for others quite apart from our personal opinions, and there is nothing wrong with that.
