    There is a book called Drowning Towers, by George Turner, that brilliantly describes the world we may be heading for.  It was first published back in 1987 (won the Arthur C. Clarke award in the UK for best science fiction novel) and I think it is still compelling, disturbing reading - maybe moreso now than when it was first published.

    Out of print, but you can get used copies cheap on Amazon. I'd highly recommend it.
