Melting may speed up and the internal drainage may keep the water from lubricating the base of the glaciers. On the other hand, warm sea waters may undermine outlet glaciers and speed up break up at the outlets.

We need to keep track of different process carefully before we jump to conclusions about the overall rates of ice loss on Greenland.

This post focused on the albedo-warming-melting feedback loop. These feedback loops are critical to system behavior, but scientists are still struggling to integrate the different loops into models of whole system behavior.

That's why the last IPCC report backed away from modelling ice sheet behavior on Greenland and Antarctica. The uncertainty in system behavior was so high they were uncomfortable including it. Unfortunately, that may have led to a low-ball estimate of rates of ice loss that needs to be corrected in the next IPCC report.

look for my eSci diary series Thursday evening.

    •  Thank you. i didn't see a conflict, more that (0+ / 0-)

additional surface melting may not be a signal of imminent large scale melting or movement of land locked glaciers. (Do i have that right?)
