The lies are so outrageous though that they will have to play the false equivalency game and cherry pick Obama statements and drum them up to make them sound comparable.

Romney is just appealing to right wing perception fantasies.  It does reflect the hatred the right has of Obama. The public doesn't share that and generally finds Obama more likeable. Think it will factor into the debates. If Romney uses the same tone people will think he sounds hostile and mean.

how good a debater Romney is. I think it is something that we need to play up more than we are doing, what a great debater Romney is, and Obama is not that good of a debater, even go as far as to say because that is one place he can not depend on his teleprompter. As hard as that is to do, we need to do it, we need to lower expectations on our guy and raise them on Romeny. Then we need to let the chips fall where they may, and I think standing side by side, the likablilty of Obama will not be the only thing people notice, his honesty will also be on display, and Romney's dishonesty.
In the 2008 Presidential debates, Obama was not the best debater, he didn't score the most points, but what was clear to almost everyone was he was the most honest player on that stage. I am hopeful the same will be true in these debates, you can practice debate techniques, you can study up on the questions that will be asked, but people can see through the dishonesty in a hearbeat, the truth always shines through, no matter what.

      •  Lowering Expectations. It Worked For Palin. (1+ / 0-)

Seems like spokespeople for candidates play this. All Palin had to do was speak. Didn't have to form sentences even. She spoke with her usual word salad style and she exceeded expectations.

Romney still speaks as if he is trying to appeal to the GOP base even though we are in the general election cycle. I don't think this will change. I think Obama will compare well with him in the debate because Romney will spend most of the time dissing Obama with the lies. The right wing will love it but I don't think it will appeal to swing voters. They are counting on the fact that a fired up GOP base will turn out and give him the victory. To fire them up you have to regurgitate the zombie lies about Obama.

        •  It worked most notably for W. (0+ / 0-)

Some people were even marking him down as having won a debate or two, which was patently ridiculous, given his complete and utter lack of knowledge or veracity.

      •  My fervent hope (0+ / 0-)

is that you are correct, with regards to the electorate.

I am afraid that reality will trump my hope, because in the end, critical thinking skills are sorely lacking in this country.

You and I know that President Obama is miles ahead of Willard on the honesty front, the question however, will the American people pick up on it?

If they are looking for it I think they will discover that the president is their man. My hunch is that so many idiots have been so indoctrinated by the right wing that they will not be looking and will cast their vote for Willard.

This by the way is one of the reasons I think Willard lies as much as he does.
Look how most people receive their news. We know the media isn't really doing their job. Furthermore, you have right wing radio blasting from one corner of this country to the other.

Here at Dkos people are digging for the news and paying attention...on purpose. Most here do not watch TV news and if we do it is with a jaundiced eye.

Willard is counting on people that don't pay attention and that is a crapload of people in this country nowdays.

        •  I think it is the right time to start planting in (0+ / 0-)

minds of even the mindless how Romney lies, lies and then lies some more. Perhaps time to run that footage of Gingrich calling him a "liar". We need to do more than just lower expectations for the President, we need to make people think Romney is a liar, that he is dishonest, and then when everyone is watching they will be able to recognize it, no matter how hard he tries, he will not be able to hide it.
At least now we also have the British press on our side, even if our press is not, we need to ride this one out and make it work.
I have every confidence that teh President will be on the debate stage and he will come across as an honest broker, Romeny will try, but I am hopeful he will fail, he is a liar, but he is not good at it.
