  •  We do want to go there (13+ / 0-)

That entire family has been about service to self, not service to country.  I will grant that Mitt's dad did care about Detroit and he did have a good record on civil rights.  But his primary job was running a major corporation, and profitting handsomely by that.  You can be patriotic and a good citizen and run a company, but I wouldn't exactly call it "service".

And service doesn't have to be military, either.  Am I correct that none of the Romney boys spent any time as Vista volunteers?  Peace Corps?  Relief workers?  Teachers?

Have any of the current crop of Romneys done anything that was not explicitly self-serving?  "Serving" as governor doesn't count - that was personal advancement.  Oh, and living in a mansion while trying to inflict your cult on innocent French citizens doesn't count as service, either.

not the rule. And I think he'd be ashamed of the campaign his spawn is running.

    •  But don't go there with George, I think (4+ / 0-)

George Romney didn't serve in the military in WWII, but he did spend the war overseeing the conversion of the auto industry to an arms industry. That was important and necessary, and he was probably more useful there than in a uniform.

(Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with all the details of what he did during the war, but on the whole, that's the impression I've gotten.)

I think Willard's father was a decent man. I totally agree with the assessment of the current crop of Romneys, and we need to point out the service of the President's family. But many remember George fondly. We probably don't do ourselves any good by saying bad things about him.

(I wonder what George would have to say about Willard--was he disappointed before he died?)
