  •  He's such a fu#$ing asshole (23+ / 0-)

I don't know how else to put it.  He can't help it.  Even when he is trying to be on his best behavior on the global scale, he just can't stop being an asshole. In the homeland during campaign stops, he insults likely voters with stupid remarks about their cookies and rainy weather clothing, so is it surprising that he insults the Brits in their own land, even if his campaign  claims that their standard bearer share some bizarro "anglo-saxon" magical bond?  Again I say: he's an asshole.

I vote Democratic because I am a woman with self-respect , who rejects bigotry of all kinds, subscribes to science, believes in universal health care, embraces unions, and endorses smart internationalist foreign policy.

To say nothing of him personally, because he's probably a nice guy, and he may not even share the view of this 'mystery adviser'...but he still gives me asshole vibes too.  Hopefully he won't make some insulting poncho remarks if it rains in London while he's there...

I believe in the long-term arc of hope.

    •  Playing up the mean side for GOP base? (0+ / 0-)

If this were earlier in the season, that is when the GOP still had at least a hypothetical chance of nominating someone less embarrassing, I'd say he was playing up his mean side on purpose. What better way to show the GOP base that he's one of them, than to misunderstand, misquote and mistreat foreign leaders to their faces?

But, the primary season is all but over, and the base are stuck with him. If they haven't gotten the fact yet that Romney is whiter than the Obama, a line about his "Anglo-Saxon" sympathies with one out of many of Britain's ethnicities is not likely to finally convince them. Cracks about London's failure to live up to Utahn desert heat won't win him votes in stormy New England or Tornado Alley, either.

So what's the deal? Polls show him he'd better play up the parochial boob character or lose the rube vote? Campaign managed by parodists in deep cover? Candidate constitutionally unable to behave in public? Whether the poor behavior is for his base, or merely accidental, his experience with American papers has done nothing to prepare him for the backlash. Saying London might not be ready for the games? Game on, my friend.

Why is there a Confederate Flag flying in Afghanistan?

According to my friends in Gloucestershire, Brits are already beginning to call Mitt Romney "the American Borat." #RomneyShambles
