I understand about comment strings and what replies to what. Hopefully no one from the GOP is even reading these blogs, let alone taking my words out of context as they are doing with President Obama. The usual GOP line, however, as I have heard it all my life, is that the welfare state destroyed the British Empire, a view that is wrong on so many levels it is hard to begin. I was motivated to comment by the sheer oddness and wrongness of Romney's comment, as in a lifetime of puzzling over what happened to the Superpower of the 19th century I have never heard anyone give the credit to British protectionism before Romney.

Something has gone very wrong with America, not just its economy, but its ability to function as a democratic nation. And it’s hard to see when or how that wrongness will get fixed. Paul Krugman and Robin Wells

The truely sad thing is that I think even the Republicans turn the sound off when they see him on the telly.

They see his lips move and gaze upon his white handsomeness and are happy.

But he has to make their brains hurt something fierce when they actually listen, particularly ones who are sane  like his dear old departed dad.
