  •  So is ABC going to correct their story? (11+ / 0-)

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see the linked ABC story acknowledging that the Churchill bust is still in the White House.

    •  It's not - he did return it. (4+ / 0-)

It was on loan to George W. after 9/11.  They offered to extend the loan, but Obama sent it back.  Not a big deal, except to Glenn Beck, of course.

Thanks for the link.  Now I'm confused.

If you google it there was a kerfluffle about it.

          Huffington Post

It was on a bunch of other sites too.  Newsweek, Democratic Underground.  The Telegraph.  But I don't think the White House would lie.  ?????????

conspiracy theories from both sides.  Reports from someone who was in the negotiations (anonymous), who reports that Obama said.....blah blah blah, revealing himself as either a Kenyan colonialist or a corporatist shill.

The real source?  My hairdresser's cousin's best friend is married to the guy who delivered sandwiches to the Oval Office (BTW they have a kitchen there) and he said he heard Obama say blah blah blah while Biden was paying the tab.

It's the level or news reportage we have to contend with.  I just assume that whatever it is is a lie until I have time to check a few different sources.  Or I just take the lazy woman's way out and assume it's a lie because it came from (fill in the blank)

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.

        •  perhaps the plans to send it back changed? (2+ / 0-)

The two links above (and the one to the original CBS story at Media Matters) would seem to contradict each other, but perhaps the bust didn't end up going back after all. It does seem a little strange that the White House statement from 2012 wouldn't clarify that, yes, the White House Curator was quoted as saying in 2010 that it was already scheduled to go back.

at the end of that blog entry:

Since my post on the fact that the bust of Winston Churchill has remained on display in the White House, despite assertions to the contrary, I have received a bunch of questions -- so let me provide some additional info. The White House has had a bust of Winston Churchill since the 1960’s. At the start of the Bush administration Prime Minister Blair lent President Bush a bust that matched the one in the White House, which was being worked on at the time and was later returned to the residence.  The version lent by Prime Minister Blair was displayed by President Bush until the end of his Presidency. On January 20, 2009 -- Inauguration Day -- all of the art lent specifically for President Bush’s Oval Office was removed by the curator’s office, as is common practice at the end of every presidency. The original Churchill bust remained on display in the residence. The idea put forward by Charles Krauthammer and others that President Obama returned the Churchill bust or refused to display the bust because of antipathy towards the British is completely false and an urban legend that continues to circulate to this day.
So it sounds like the bust from the Oval Office was returned, and in the photograph, the President and Prime Minister are admiring a separate bust. (Err, as in figure sculpture.)

And if the White House press office didn't get the story right the first time? It means that this kind of thing is so far under the radar that only a Republican would choose to make a big deal out of it.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.

        •  Very clear explanation ... which I hadn't read b/4 (6+ / 0-)
News outlets have debunked this claim time and again. First, back in 2010 the National Journal reported that “the Churchill bust was relocated to a prominent spot in the residence to make room for Abraham Lincoln, a figure from whom the first African-American occupant of the Oval Office might well draw inspiration in difficult times.” And just in case anyone forgot, just last year the AP reported that President Obama “replaced the Oval Office fixture with a bust of one of his American heroes, President Abraham Lincoln, and moved the Churchill bust to the White House residence.”
