i teach at a major university (and was born during eisenhower's first term), so i think i took "civics" classes and probably know what a "federation" is

my international students have a difficult time understanding the wondrousness of the real life consequences of our federation, which i believe is the topic of this diary

thanks for the attempt at condecension, however

"Federation" is a quality not unique to the US. Other countries which describe themselves as federations include Germany, Canada, Nigeria, & Ethiopia. Some federations work better than others.

I can't help it that you find it difficult to explain the concept of "checks & balances" to your students, which is bound up with the concept of federalism -- another concept which is not unique to the US. Neither should be that unfamiliar to your foreign students.

You found condescension where none was intended, although I understand it is common amongst self-described professional experts such as academics. It appears that Republican politicians aren't the only ones guilty of projection.
