View Diary: Here's why Romney will NEVER release his tax forms, and why we need to keep hounding him (186 comments)

  •  RLF - Romney has already released a detailed (0+ / 0-)

draft of his 2011 return so there really isn't any point to not release the final. The return is due on October 15th and I don't think it is remotely possible that he will not disclose the 2011 return once filed.

To begin with, taxes are due in April, not October. It's not like Romney was too busy to file them on time - his accountants could probably have filed them January 1. The fact that he's leaving them until TWO WEEKS before the election is already a dodge.

Secondly, you've got to take his word that his draft taxes are correct. Romney is famous for his lies. What reason do you have to trust him?

Thirdly, Romney's 2010 returns were, in many people's eyes, incomplete. What's the political cost of NOT releasing his 2011 returns two weeks before the election? Two weeks before the elections, people's minds are made up, and Romney's decision not to release his tax returns will be factored into the elections. Failure, at that stage, to release his returns, won't lose him many new votes.

Given all of these, I see no reason to take Romney's statement on faith. "You people" already have all you need, don't you know?

As an October filer for 35 years I can assure you that your TAXES are due on April 15th, but the deadline to file your return is Oct 15th. Any taxpayer can receive an automatic six month extension by sending in a simple form by April 15th. The reason that individual returns are not due until Oct 15th is that partnerships and corporations have to file their tax returns by Sept 15th. At that point they report to their limited partners and shareholders. For all limited partners, and shareholders of Sub Chapter S or LLCs, those profits and losses flow through to each individual return. Romney's accountants did make public a detailed draft in January but the final information will not reach them before August and more likely September. That is why he will file in October.
