  •  These results should be absolutely no surprise. (9+ / 0-)

As it turns out, the global temperature network is so robust that someone with programming skills can easily replicate the global-average temperature results published by NASA/NOAA/etc.

The global warming signal in the data is so strong that it "jumps right out" even with very crude data processing techniques.  Furthermore, it is not difficult at all to demonstrate that UHI, data-homogenization, etc. have almost no impact on global-average temperature results.

Raw vs homogenized data?  Similar global-average results.

Rural vs. urban data? Ditto. Similar global-averge results.

The global temperature network is so robust that you can confirm the official NASA results by crunching raw data from fewer than 70 rural stations (aka "sparse rural stations") scattered around the world.  (The GHCN temperature network consists of 7000+ stations).

I put together a little zip file of results that show how closely you can replicate the NASA results with raw data taken from fewer than 70 temperature stations, all rural.

The zip file contains a plot showing the NASA results vs. the "sparse rural stations" results. In addition, it contains a couple of Google-Earth image snapshots, one of which shows the locations of the stations NASA uses, and the other of which shows the locations of the stations I used to produce the "sparse rural stations" results.

The images provide pretty a dramatic visual representation of the robustness of the global temperature results.

In addition, there's a README file that explains exactly how the results were computed.
