Fortunately my friends have enough money that they can hire a lawyer ... but Ben is given to being too trusting of the wrong people and not really capable of understanding what is really going on. He has flat out told his parents that he does not think that he will survive.

Thank you for the information. It breaks my heart to see what all this is doing to my friends, especially when I know that prison is not a good place for Ben ... but I have been worried about what would happen to him for as long as I have known him. It definately makes what I believe intellectually into vivid reality.

When your friends locate their son, have them check to see if that particular prison has an ombudsman office.  They are *supposedly a liaison between inmates, jail officials and families.  Hopefully his family can then express their concerns about their son's mental health and get some help for him.
      But....having said that...
I use that word (supposedly) loosely as my relative's prison states they have that service but I have yet been able to reach anyone.
