  •  Should they also remember... (4+ / 0-)

the victims of the Olympic Park Bombing in 1996?

    •  No--Atlanta, or the US should be responsible to (1+ / 0-)

you would draw such a distinction.  Could you elaborate?

        •  The IOC is responsible for putting on the (7+ / 0-)

Olympic games.  They ask each country to send their best, to represent their country.  These athletes, while housed in the Olympic Village, were attacked, kidnapped and murdered.  They died because people hated their religion and country.  It was a specific event designed to send a specific message.

The Olympic Park bombing was outside the Olympic Village where athletes are housed.  It was not specific to the Olympics, thye athletes or any particular country.  It was an opportunity, where many were gathering.  It just as easily could have happened placed at a football game or concert.

The difference is Munich was about Olympic athletes representing their country.  Not a random attack that didn't care who was harmed.  Munich was an attack on the Olympics itself and what it supposedly cares about.

          •  But the Olympicis not just an athletic event... (3+ / 0-)

it is a spectacle.  It is designed to draw people from around the world to witness the athletic competition.  The Olympic Park bomber purposefully targeted the Olympics, not just because it was a crowd of people, but because he abhorred what he believed the Olympic Games stood for.  The Olympic Park bombing was every bit as much an attack on the Olympics as the Munich Massacre was.

is incorrect.  A guy named Eric Rudolph (i think) wanted to make a bomb go off in a crowd to protest abortions.  He didn't give a shit about what the Olympics stood for.  He wanted a crowd and a viewership.

It had nothing to do with making any statement about the Olympics, the athletes or the countries.

Munich was very much about the Olympics and its athletes and countries.

Atlanta was not about the Olympics or its athletes or the countries.

This is why Munich was different.

              •  You are incorrect. (1+ / 0-)

I am aware of the name of the bomber.(You are correct about his name.)  I chose not to use it for the same reason people have chosen not to use the name the Aurora shooter.  While it is true the bomber had also targeted abortion clinics, the Olympic Park bombing was intended to disrupt the Olympic games.  You can read the bomber's statement here.

                •  Ok--I apolgize for saying you were incorrect about (1+ / 0-)

the bombing, but I still believe Munich and Atlanta are much different (as I do believe most of the world does--sorry I can't site this opinion).

Munich was very much about murdering Olympians representing a specific country.

Atlanta was not about the Olympics, other than it was a big event in the USA.  Munich would have happened in any country.

Atlanta was about protesting a law in the USA.

Munich was about murdering athletes from Israel while they participated at the Olympics.

I guess I just see a difference between the two.  I'm not going to try to make you see it.

                  •  thank you for correcting yourself (1+ / 0-)

those murders had absolutely fuck all to do with religion and everything to do with the geopolitics of israel.

as a direct result of the Atlanta bombing.  The other fatality that night was a reporter who had a heart attack while running to film the scene of the bombing.

Not to devalue the unnecessary loss of life, pushing for accuracy.

And like Munich it was the result of terrorism.  So yes, as part of every opening, the IOC should take a stand against terrorism as an idea that is antithetical to the stated purpose of the Olympic games.
