There are lots and lots of overweight Canadians.

Keep in mind that only about four edible things grow well in most of Canada: wheat, root vegetables, maple trees, and cattle. Thus almost all traditional specifically-Canadian cuisine consists of flour, potatoes, butter, lard, cheese, beef, beer, and maple syrup.

Quebec is interesting, because they inherit from the French dietary and lifestyle traditions in some ways that are protective against unhealthy levels of obesity. But even there...well, they invented poutine, quite possibly the most unhealthy non-sugar-based food ever to be devised, which is traditionally served in portions that would make Outback Steakhouse blush.

The Maritimes and coastal BC eat quite a lot of fish and shellfish for obvious reasons. The Maritimes diet (along with the rest of the culture) has a lot in common with the small islands off the coast of Scotland.

The rest of the country inherits mostly from Scottish Highland and English traditions with some local twists, none of which are improvements from a health perspective. Bland, starchy, and fatty are the rule.

Obviously, we don't all eat our traditional foods all of the time, but our palates are shaped by the food of our childhood. Exotic textures and strong flavours don't get much traction. Fast food, on the other hand, fits right in. And so Canadians are getting fat right alongside Americans. We're a little slower about it, but not that much. I think Ontario's pushing similar obesity rates to Mississippi. (Ontario's cultural heritage is extremely similar to that of poor Southern white Americans).

"Let’s just move on, treat everybody with firmness, fairness, dignity, compassion and respect. Let’s be Marines." - Sgt. Maj Michael Barrett on DADT repeal
