  •  At this point, what proof is there that he doesn't (3+ / 0-)

have some of his staff putting together fake but realistic-looking returns to eventually present?  If he did release phony returns, would the Lazy Media even research them?

    •  The IRS could, without any breech of (14+ / 0-)

confidentiality, simply say those are not the returns we received, not did we (the IRS) collect the tax revenues as indicated on the 'new' returns. And sue the heck out of Romney for filing a false return. Plus penalties. And interest. And a couple of years in prison for some very, very dumb CPAs.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia".

      •  I think that would be too much under 6103 (0+ / 0-)

        IRC SEction 6103

        (a) General rule
Returns and return information shall be confidential, and except as authorized by this title—

[ed.  no government employee or official] ...

shall disclose any return or return information obtained by him in any manner in connection with his service as such an officer or an employee or otherwise or under the provisions of this section. For purposes of this subsection, the term “officer or employee” includes a former officer or employee.

        (b) Definitions
        For purposes of this section—

        (1) Return
The term “return” means any tax or information return, declaration of estimated tax, or claim for refund required by, or provided for or permitted under, the provisions of this title which is filed with the Secretary by, on behalf of, or with respect to any person, and any amendment or supplement thereto, including supporting schedules, attachments, or lists which are supplemental to, or part of, the return so filed.

        (2) Return information
        The term “return information” means—

(A)a taxpayer’s identity, the nature, source, or amount of his income, payments, receipts, deductions, exemptions, credits, assets, liabilities, net worth, tax liability, tax withheld, deficiencies, overassessments, or tax payments, whether the taxpayer’s return was, is being, or will be examined or subject to other investigation or processing, or any other data, received by, recorded by, prepared by, furnished to, or collected by the Secretary with respect to a return or with respect to the determination of the existence, or possible existence, of liability (or the amount thereof) of any person under this title for any tax, penalty, interest, fine, forfeiture, or other imposition, or offense,

        •  There are exceptions to the 6103 prohibition. (4+ / 0-)

A criminal case for criminal tax fraud or a civil action for tax fraud could be instituted by the government, and the government filings could state what the basis is for the action.

The influence of the [executive] has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished.

          shall be confidential.

Saying that a document is NOT a true copy of a filed return does not disclose anything about the true return.

It just says "The document I was shown in NOT the return."  That means that there is a cover-up underway.

THAT would be EVEN worse (because a cover-up is ALWAYS worse than the bad act itself.)

          •  I did previously suggest that one could be devious (0+ / 0-)

and file a "clean" 1040, and then file an amended return on Form 1040-X with all he bad stuff disclosed there.

Then one releases the 1040 but not the 1040-X.

How does one EVER get to the bottom of that?

Really sleazy, but really hard to discover.

            Just sayin'.
