  •  I find this interesting, (0+ / 0-)

I don't mean pile on to make a point. But apparently there was plenty of controversy about George Romney. The columnist James Kirkpatrick in January 1968 wrote about speculation that George Romney's father might have given up his citizenship when he moved to Mexico, where George Romney was born. He suggested that the matter of eligibility needed to be settled before the question got bogged down in litigation.

If Romney had won in 1968 would diehard Democrats have carried on a campaign to discredit him? Perhaps a few. But it's safe to say in that TV and newspapers would either have ignored them or marginalized them so effectively that they would have been inconsequential. The likelihood of serious politicians flirting with the fringe seems very small.

    •  It's hard to say, but (0+ / 0-)

There would have been some born-again crazies going after him forthat, and his Mormonism, too. And those crazies would still have been Democrats in 1968.

What you probably wouldn't have heard a peep about was that he belonged to a church that doctrinally discriminated against black people.
