  •  but there is a possibility of some sort of ethics (3+ / 0-)

review. I'm not sure it would apply in this case since lousy research is not necessarily unethical. However, I have to wonder if this:

Sherkat believes that Regnerus, whom he has known for two decades, made a decision to push a conservative political agenda in his academic work a number of years ago, and that this paper is evidence of it.
could start some sort of censuring process.
There's also a possibility that Regnerus might have a hard time publishing anything anymore, at least in legitimate journals. They are likely to be suspicious of anything he produces.
It's pretty disgusting that Social Science Research signed off on this. You have to wonder what the editor was thinking.
OTOH, The Lancet -- which is about as prestigious and respected a journal as it gets in medicine -- is single-handedly responsible for massive problems in vaccine rates because of publishing the POS Wakefield article "based" on 12 children which concluded that the measles vaccine caused autism. (One of the ironic things about the "study" is that there were more co-authors than there were subjects:
In the original paper, Wakefield and 12 coauthors claimed to have investigated “a consecutive series” of 12 children referred to the Royal Free Hospital and School of Medicine with chronic enterocolitis and regressive developmental disorder.
