  •  I can report one college student (10+ / 0-)

who had a rocky start, sought help, and has turned it around.  The University made it a requirement for his continuation in a special program so the motivation was there, plus they had lots of support at home.

I can report that a high school student was having some suicidal thoughts and a friend reported it.  The school acted quickly to get him help, but he was somewhat resistant.  He went to the sessions, felt a little better and then wanted to end them because 'going to a counselor' was not something he wanted friends to find out about.

The stigma attached to seeking mental health care is still a big one.  Even if a patient seeks mental health care under a mandate, they can be resistant to it.  If they seek it on their own, they can be less resistant, but still put up barriers as many people are in denial.

My doctor was telling me yesterday that they found a high number of people actually smoked because they had a mild form of depression and nicotine makes it feel better.  This is why the current prescription treatment for it is actually an anti-depressant.  How many abuse drugs and alcohol because of underlying mental health issues?  Probably about 99.9%.

Spending and more education on the benefits of mental healthcare could help alleviate a lot of our problems as a nation.  Then, once everyone who needs it can get help, start addressing the underlying reason for some mental illness.

...of public and private (i.e.: insurance co's, etc.) funds directed towards mental illness programs/issues in this country, IMHO. The fact that it's still stigmatized in society is, I'm sure, something that'll be looked back upon by future generations as a typical example of the barbarity of our (era) society.
